8XC Series Mobile Multimedia Base Station
dvb-h product description

Digital Video Broadcasting to Handheld (DVB-H) technology delivers live broadcast television to mobile handheld devices, providing personal mobile television. The DVB-H standard was built on the DVB-T standard that serves millions of homes worldwide. DVB-H has additional schemes to allow mobile applications, including time slicing to minimize power consumption in handheld devices and MPE-FEC to reduce block data corruption caused by fading in mobile environments. DVB-H handsets typically combine the functionalities of a mobile phone, PDA, television and more, providing next generation personal content delivery.

Axcera is the leading manufacturer of DVB-H transmitters with state of the art designs and world-class quality manufacturing. Axcera's total DVB-H solutions consist of completely integrated transmission systems including Axcera transmitters and site controllers, along with IP encapsulators, satellite receive equipment and microwave STLs, GPS receivers, transmission line and antennas, power conditioning, battery backup systems, security systems, and climate controlled environmental enclosures. Strong relationships with multiple manufacturers and industry partners for each system component allow Axcera to provide a true best-of-breed solution for each service provider's individual needs.

Axcera offers a wide range of DVB-H products in frequency bands from VHF through 2.7GHz and at power levels ranging from a few watts to tens of kilowatts.

There are two primary architectures for DVB-H transmission systems, depending upon the business model of the network operator. The first, which is most common among traditional broadcasters, allocates a portion of the available RF channel to a standard DVB-T signal and the remaining bandwidth to multiple DVB-H programs. This allows broadcasters to incorporate a new income stream that was simply not possible with analog television. A typical configuration of this architecture is shown below.

The second model is that of a pure DVB-H service provider. In the diagram above, the DVB-T encoder is eliminated and the entire RF channel is dedicated to DVB-H content. This allows a substantial number of video and audio programs, along with data streaming, to be delivered to the mobile viewers over a single 5, 6, 7 or 8 MHz RF channel, providing a service superior to previously available mobile video delivery offerings.

The DVB-H signal is handled in the same fashion for both architectures. Multiple programs, preferably formatted for best viewing on the small screen of a handheld device, are encoded for DVB-H and delivered to the IP encapsulator over Ethernet. The IP, or "Internet Protocol", encapsulator (IPE) configures the required time slicing to optimize handset power consumption, adds forward error correction (FEC) for a robust signal, sets the desired quality of service (QoS) to prioritize the mobile data, and along with an IPE management system, allows cell-to-cell handover in multi-transmitter networks. The ASI output from the IPE feeds the DVB-T/DVB-H compatible transmitter for delivery to the viewers. Systems can be configured with a single, higher power transmitter, but a single frequency network design is recommended for the best coverage to mobile handheld devices.
